Ok, it's been over a month since I was tagged, and I'm never going to find time to do all 7, so I'm going to have to answer 1 per day for a week.

Basically, you comment to this post, and I will choose 7 of your interests that I am curious about. You post about them in your own journal and we continue from there. So--

All definitions are what they mean to me...not from a dictionary, wiki, or other source.

Armadillos

I started collecting armadillos when I was 14. The president of my high school church choir (Lutheran) had a friend who was a sculptor, and made these weird armadillo sculptures, and donated one to the auction that we had to raise funds for our summer tour. It was the strangest thing I'd ever seen, and I just had to have it. Pretty soon, people started saying to me, "I saw an armadillo last week--you have to go buy it." Before I knew it, I had an armadillo collection. I'm particularly enamored of the Pink Fairy Armadillo, which is a tiny, 3-banded armadillo in South America, because, well, you know, anything pink is better than anything that isn't pink. My favorite in my collection is one made of abalone, that I got at the Hotel Hacienda Vista Hermosa, I don't remember where in Mexico.

Sarah Palin is encouraging in many respects, and one of them is Ted Stevens. She represents an effort to clean up the GOP, getting it focused on principles, guided by love of country and conservative instincts. She took on corruption in the party in Alaska. And there's no reason to believe she won't in the White House — she'll represent the Right direction on so many issues. John McCain's choice seems especially encouraging this week.

10/29 01:16 PM

1. What I was doing 10 years ago: Aside from spending the 4th of July in Ojai, not entirely sure—I think I’ve blocked it out. Probably working at an import/export company that was eventually bought by FedEx. No, I take that back—I just checked an old resume. I didn’t start working at Tower Group until September, I was going to summer school at FIDM.

2. What 5 things are on on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order):
I can only pick 5?????
Sew green bodice—have ready for Angelina to fit
Chemise—finish edges of last gusset, and draw embroidery pattern on sleeves
Finish reading Lucia: A Venetian Life in the Age of Napoleon
Clean car
Finish reading all Quilting books
Plant everything that can be planted in pots, water and start plotting where to plant everything else (I bought about 30 plants in Cambria and Paso Robles this weekend)
Fill out passport application
Write resume
Apply for job at KUSC

3. Snacks I enjoy:
Stuffed Basil Leaves
Chocolate
Cheese and crackers
Soy parmesan on toasted pita bread
Watermelon, grapes

4. Things I would do if I were a billionaire:
Buy a Birkin bag . And dog collars to match.
Build a beachfront Palladian villa in PV Estates, with a courtyard strongly resembling the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, a couple of acres of gardens, the most enormous bathtub known to mankind, and an even bigger walk-in closet. And a library on every floor.
Take a cruise to Antarctica
Go to India for 6 months to study yoga.
Quit my job, take voice lessons and riding lessons, and start training to walk across England, compose a symphony and an opera, maybe write a novel.
Move to France, and learn to speak French.
Pay someone to make all my garb.
And then I would have to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. This is the part where I start using the money to make a positive impact on the world. Maybe something to do with literacy.

5. Places I have lived:
Rolling Hills Estates, CA
Claremont, CA

AFA's Search/Replace Function Works Perfectly

Category: Politics
Posted on: June 30, 2008 9:30 AM, by Ed Brayton

This is absolutely hilarious. The American Family Association has a policy at its new outlet, OneNewsNow, never to use the word "gay" but to replace it with "homosexual." And that works absolutely perfectly until they write an article about an athlete whose last name is Gay, as in Tyson Gay, the fastest man on the US Olympic track team. And then you get this:

Tyson Homosexual was a blur in blue, sprinting 100 meters faster than anyone ever has.

His time of 9.68 seconds at the U.S. Olympic trials Sunday doesn't count as a world record, because it was run with the help of a too-strong tailwind. Here's what does matter: Homosexual qualified for his first Summer Games team and served notice he's certainly someone to watch in Beijing.

"It means a lot to me," the 25-year-old Homosexual said. "I'm glad my body could do it, because now I know I have it in me."

http://scienceblogs.com/dispatches/2008/06/afas_searchreplace_function_wo.php

Lesbian Poodles in Guatemala

Perhaps the most comical of all CIA clandestine activities — unfortunately all too typical of its covert operations over the last 60 years — was the spying it did in 1994 on the newly appointed American ambassador to Guatemala, Marilyn McAfee, who sought to promote policies of human rights and justice in that country. Loyal to the murderous Guatemalan intelligence service, the CIA had bugged her bedroom and picked up sounds that led their agents to conclude that the ambassador was having a lesbian love affair with her secretary, Carol Murphy. The CIA station chief "recorded her cooing endearments to Murphy." The agency spread the word in Washington that the liberal ambassador was a lesbian without realizing that "Murphy" was also the name of her two-year-old black standard poodle. The bug in her bedroom had recorded her petting her dog. She was actually a married woman from a conservative family.

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2007_08/011800.php
